The Rival Hydrovac was a truck designed after many years of watching the growth in the hydroexcavation industry, and the equipment available. Given that the industry was born primarily in oil and gas pipeline and facility applications, the traditional equipment was powerful and robust but was not intended for use in urban environments. Rival designed its T7 model from the ground up focusing on what it thought needed to be adjusted given the changes in the applications for these units.
The driving factor in design was weight. Rival sought to design a truck that could be loaded with debris of a density that is in the range of normal for hydroexcavation and still be able to legally transport that load to disposal. To do that, the company had to make sacrifices in componentry and capacity while maintaining a high performance machine.
“We were not sure as to how the market would accept this approach, but we were pleasantly surprised that in many markets our assumptions were accurate,” says a company spokesperson. “Most of the larger units in these markets were being loaded to well under capacity for weight reasons, which in terms of productivity — it made our truck ‘bigger.’ We then added a scale with readouts in the cab and on the remote screen for instances where the water tanks have retained product or the material is unusual in density.”
The company finally simplified operation to one PTO switch and added tie-off spots, a grounding post and a retractable railing atop the truck to allow for safe access during servicing.
