The Christmas traditions we should lose

Why Matt Rife's sexist jokes are the standard for young, male internet comedians 29 November 2023   Nigella has done it again. This past weekend she caused heated debate by  recommending we all stop making Christmas cake , given her theory that few of us actually like it and that it ends up "gathering dust" on the kitchen counter anyway. This got us thinking on the culture and lifestyle desk here at  The Independent . So, in the spirit of Christmas, we asked, what are some other festive traditions and bizarre Christmas obsessions  that we can put in a bag and set alight? Call us Scrooges, but after a good think – and a lengthy rant – we realised that there are many things wrongfully associated with the festive season that we truly detest.
